New Year's Eve 2015: What Are The Best Hangover Cures?
After a night of partying, what ways will make New Year's Day a lot more bearable?
"Hair of the dog"
According to Health Magazine, the worst possible attempt at curing a hangover is having another drink. Charles Cutler, MD, an internist in Norristown, Pa., says you feel horrible after a night of drinking because alcohol is toxic and your body needs some recovery time in order to get better.Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, MD, a consultant in addiction psychiatry at the Mayo Clinc, told Men's Health that drinking more the next day could "provide a numbing effect" but the effects will be long term and could "make your headache worse." There is also the risk of increasing alcohol abuse or dependency by using this as a remedy to a hangover.Source: http://www.menshealth.com/guy-wisdom/11-ways-to-ease-nasty-hangover/more-alcohol-hair-doghttp://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20452426_2,00.html
Greasy or breakfast foods
Ron Swanson has lied to you (or at least in the above gif).According to Dr. Cutler at Health Magazine, "there is no scientific evidence" that breakfast items such as bacon and eggs can help to cure a hangover. Dr. Cutler says, instead of acting as a cure, breakfast or greasy foods will just lead to heartburn. The goal in the morning after is getting calories back, not adding more. But Men's Health says that eating greasy foods happens, and that the key to keeping off the hangover is eating some before. According to the magazine, "food helps slow the absorption of alcohol" so by eating a big meal before, it will allow you to last longer before becoming intoxicated while out on the town.Sources: http://www.menshealth.com/guy-wisdom/11-ways-to-ease-nasty-hangover/greasy-foodhttp://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20452426_3,00.html
Taking pills may not be the answer, according to Health Magazine, as most have been proven to be ineffective while others could lead to other health issues."Hangover pills that have been studied are not effective, or only help against a few complaints, but not all," Joris C. Verster, PhD, and assistant professor of psychopharamcology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said. While pills may work on a headache, Dena Davidson, PhD, a former associate professor of psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine told Men's Health that it can cause more extenuating issues. "While it's OK for a headache, when combined with a liver that's working overtime to metabolize alcohol, it can cause liver damage or be deadly."Fitness Magazine agrees, saying that those who want to take a pill should avoid Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin as remedies. Dr. Cutler told Health that a multivitamin the next morning would be the best course.Sources: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20452426_5,00.htmlhttp://www.menshealth.com/guy-wisdom/11-ways-to-ease-nasty-hangover/pain-medicationhttp://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/hangover-cures/?page=5
Water or sports drinks
One of the most obvious cures is water or sports drinks. According to Health Magazine and Dr. Cutler, "juice, water, Gatorade, all of those things" are the best ways to help you feel better from a hangover.Dr. Hall-Flavin told Men's Health that he recommends drinking 16-to-20 ounces of water prior to falling asleep after your night out or ordering a water alongside your drink when at the bar.Sports drinks work as well with Fitness Magazine reporting that Gatorade and Powerade contain electrolytes, which help to replenish your system and give you energy.Sources: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20452426_7,00.htmlhttp://www.menshealth.com/guy-wisdom/11-ways-to-ease-nasty-hangover/waterhttp://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/hangover-cures/?page=7
The best way to cure that hangover? A good night's sleep (like Totoro!)According to Health Magazine, consuming a lot of alcohol will make you fall asleep quickly, but when it wears off, the effects can keep you awake and uncomfortable. Dr. Cutler recommends "sleeping it off" if you have the time because it will allow the body to "heal on its own."Alternative methods, such as sex, could also help a hangover. "There is no research that shows that sex will make a hangover go away, but maybe it will make the time go faster, Dr. Verster told Men's Health. "If it makes you happy, go for it."Sources: http://www.menshealth.com/guy-wisdom/11-ways-to-ease-nasty-hangover/sexhttp://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20452426_11,00.html
