Aussie rapper AllDay shares a playlist of his influences
Mazzy Star, "Fade Into You"
"I found this song on Tumblr recently and it's pretty cool. I follow a lot of Tumblrs that are like dead angels and coffins [laughs]. And it was the background music on somebody's weird, like, Russian Goths or some sh-t."
Jamie xx, "Loud Places" ft. Romy
"There's this guy in Australia called Oscar Key Sung and he did a cover of it for a popular radio show here, and I hadn't heard it yet, and I thought it was amazing. I've been blasting it ever since. And that whole album—it's amazing, huh?"
Rolling Stones, "Beast of Burden"
"I was really late on the Rolling Stones. I'd heard the eighties songs, but I was more of a Beatles kid growing up, so I've only recently discovered their 'country' era. This song and 'Wild Horses' is my favorite kind of Rolling Stones."
A$AP Rocky, "Purple Swag"
"I love A$AP Rocky and I love the new album, but to me, his best stuff is still that early, leaned out style of music. He changed hip-hop with it, he really was a sort of visionary. I sort of wish he would go back to it."
Julian Casablancas, "Left & Right In The Dark"
"I just really like these lyrics, like, 'Sliding across the Indian wilderness/ Like the wind gliding down soft roads/ 6 a.m. now you're in Hollywood/ And you're dancing, we made it,' it's just so visual."
Tears For Fears, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"
"Like whoa! This is one of the best songs ever! They're so weird and cool, they don't get enough credit."
JoJo, "Too Little, Too Late"
"JoJo is just so dope. Like early 2000s she was so young and her voice is so good—I feel like people slept on it because she was a child and it was R&B but f--k, this song is so good."
Ben Lee, "Cigarettes Will Kill You"
"I don't know if this song was big in America but it was pretty big here. I just think it has some of the best piano lines in any music."
CHVRCHES, "The Mother We Share"
"Lauren Mayberry is amazing. I absolutely love her voice."
Kanye West, "Paranoid" ft. Mr. Hudson
"'808's & Heartbreak' is one of my favorite albums—it influenced everyone. I don't think a lot of today's R&B could or would exist without that album. I don't know if even I would exist the same without it. Would Drake? The consequences of that album is huge."
Prince, "1999 (Party Like It's 1999)"
"Me and my best friend used to dance to Prince when we were like 13, having our first drinks and stuff. This song came on when I was tripping in a cab and it was the craziest moment. That was actually just a few months ago [laughs]."
"As much as I like the song—and it's one of my favorite Drake songs—it's not really a sensible title, is it?"
The Psychedelic Furs, "Love My Way"
"I love a lot of the new wave stuff—British, electro-poppy, weird stuff. I realized recently how good the drums are, how good the synths. I've been listening to this song heaps."
