7 questions every American has about British Hallowe'en
American's go BIG on Hallowe'en - which is why many are surprised when they hear about what British kids used to get up to
Why are you wearing a ring with a ghost on it?
As far as ghostly sweet treats go there's nothing more British than the Greggs Hallowe'en cupcake. Coming to a baker's near you every October these cakes come with the ultimate freebie, the plastic Hallowe'en ring.
What's with the turnip?
America really outdoes itself with its incredible, award winning Jack-o'-Lantern (aka pumpkin) carvings. The UK on the other hand normally boasts a poorly carved traditional turnip which sits ignored on the doorstep.
Where are all the haunted mansions?
It's not that the Brits don't like decorating their homes with spider webs and 10 foot tall skeletons, it's just they can't really be bothered. It's a different story across the pond though where every home is a Nightmare on Elm Street.
Why's no one home?
We've all been there. You're relaxed, watching the television and the door bell goes. Anti-Hallowe'eners will switch off any porch or hall light so the kid's think no one is home. Plus it adds to the atmosphere...
...and what's with all the fruit?
Forget Candy Cane, us Brits are definitely a bit tighter when it comes to treating random children. Guisers (or trick or treaters) will no doubt get a few pence, a stale biscuit or at worst, an orange. Some unfortunate kids even end up with Monkey Nuts.
Why are you wearing a trash bag?
Unlike our American counterparts, us Brits are quite lazy when it comes to dressing up. We're more likely to have a black bin bag thrown over us and at a push a few Poundland accessories.
Why are your pets not dressed up?
Vampire dogs, zombie cats and witch hamsters, American pets love dressing up with their owners. And more often than not their costumes beat ours by miles. New York even has a Hallowe'en parade just for dogs.
