13 Times Josh Hutcherson Brought Peeta Mellark To Life Perfectly
Alright, sometimes the movies didn't do the Boy with the Bread justice, but there were some moments where the book character truly shone through.
The emotion behind one of Peeta's most memorable lines was DEAD ON in this scene.
(Even if the hair was a bit much....they figured it out for him though.)
The first real time Peeta broke your heart: when he was willing to give up his life so as to not kill the girl he loved.
And with one move, he and Katniss managed to piss off the most powerful man in the country.
The controlled emotions, the cold dead-ish eyes. Hutcherson had early-Catching-Fire-era Peeta figured out!
Haymitch had it right. "Brrrrr" indeed!
That subtle smirk was one of the early indications of just how sly Peeta Mellark truly was - something that wasn't always shown off in the flicks.
Actual thought in his mind: "Oh yeah, I got this."
Hutcherson had the emotions towards Katniss 100% figured out when it came to unspoken indications. Who can't believe he's enamored with the girl he's looking at here?
Didn't hurt matters any that he was so close to Jennifer Lawrence and became all but inseparable with the actress throughout the filming.
The slip in positive expressions when at a Capital party really helped solidify Peeta in the Snow-opposition camp. It also gives another reason he and Katniss really do have a lot in common when it's all boiled down.
It is the perfect response to being given a vomit-inducing drink solely to be able to drink more.
When dealing with the overly-not-giving-a-crap Johanna Mason, we get a snippet of a reminder that's easy to forget: Peeta Mellark is a 17 year old boy!
Do yourself a favor. Rewatch this scene. Multiple times. Watch a different person's face each time. Enjoy. It's golden.
Hey remember that time that Peeta all but broke your heart into 900 pieces in Catching Fire? You know the time. This is the time. And Josh Hutcherson freaking sold it.
It was the perfect combination of self-deprecation and bittersweet emotions. And it worked beautifully.
This was the sign of the optimist. Even in an arena he didn't expect to escape, he was able to find a small bit of joy in the tiniest of acts - like Katniss' pleased reaction to a present (a pearl) from him.
Also gotten from this tiny smile: his face actively lights up around Lawrence. Impressively so.
Okay, this one's gonna hurt. But let's just deal with the fact that Hutcherson pulled of Hijacked Peeta in a way that many did not see coming.
Not gonna lie, bummed there weren't award nominations for this one. Intense!
And then we move to a slightly better section: Real Peeta breaking through. And Hutcherson took the PTSD-esque situation seriously, and it shows, especially in scenes like this.
He went through a lot; there's no question about that. But he still tries his hardest to be with the girl he loves.
Continuing the saga of Healing Peeta...and the proving that Josh Hutcherson is a hell of an actor. This combined with the later conversation with Katniss along this same vein is amazing.
Friendly reminder that Peeta didn't remember his own favorite color but was able to recall Katniss'. It's fine. Everything's fine.
It's alright, guys. We'll end on a happy note. The chemistry between Hutcherson and Lawrence was almost always perfect, including in this scene that made a lot of the trauma of Mockingjay Part 1 worth it.
And made book lovers squeal in theaters. But we'll never admit to it. At least out loud. Do you have a favorite Peeta moment you wish you had seen in the movies? Let us know in the comments below!
